Nirmal Paintings are a popular form of paintings done in Nirmal District, Telangana. The art community of craftsmen in this town are called as ‘Naqash’ and being practiced from the 14th century.
Nirmal paintings are very unique because the medium used for painting is wood. The typical characteristic of a Nirmal Painting is that a sketch of the art is traced and then filling of colours is done to make the painting. Colouring is done with the use of nitrocellulose colors and special gold powder.
Nirmal Paintings depict the traditional art scenes related to the Hindu epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata. These paintings were influenced by the Indian Schools of Art like Kangra, Ajanta as well as Mughal miniatures. The evolution of the Nirmal art and craft is also traced back to the old era of Kakatiya dynasty. The Mughal rulers were so enraptured by the Nirmal paintings, that they patronized this art greatly.
The colours of these paintings are extracted from minerals, herbs and various other plants. The painting of this dazzling gold are set against the backdrop of black. The paintings capture rustic ethos to splendid royal environment, and right from flora to fauna, there are an explicit array of beautiful expressions which are portrayed in myriad colours and attractive forms.
