060. Kovai Kora Cotton

Kovai Kora cotton is a type of saree made in the Coimbatore region in Tamil Nadu, India. Kovai Kora Cotton saree is a blend of cotton and silk yarns beautifully woven in the fine craftsmanship, unsurpassed in the annals of textile history.

Kovai Kora Cotton means cotton yarn saree, in which the kora silk for warp and mercerized extra - long staple for weft and Jari for making pallu and putta, with intricate craftsmanship are used. Devanga community are pioneers in weaving Kovai Kora cotton sarees. Kovai Kora Cotton Sarees are very elegant for both office and regular wear.

The kora cotton sarees are woven on traditional hand-looms. The sarees have bright coloured border designs with occasional use of shining zari. The required designs are weaved using the loom using combinations of coloured cotton and silk threads and the borders are added later

The method of dyeing and the tie and dye method used for the border of Kovai Kora Cotton are the trade secrets kept by the people of particular weaving community of Coimbatore region.

Like most south Indian sarees, it’s appeal lies in its lavish pallu and border designs. Motifs, which are created by the artistic interplay of silk and cotton thread woven together. After the fabric is woven, complicated design processes are carried out in designing the border and pallu.

The climate of Coimbatore region ensures that the yarns for the warp preparation are not cut. The quality dyeing is ensured by using the water of Siruvani and Bhavani rivers, which originate from Western Ghats.

Few covers with cancellation depicting wrong Pincode can be found. Pincode wrongly mentioned as 614001 (Mannargudy) instead of 641001 (Coimbatore)
