Gobindabhog rice is a rice cultivar from West Bengal. It is a short - grain, white, aromatic, sticky rice having a sweet buttery flavour. It derives its name from its usage as the principal ingredient in the preparation of the offerings to Govindajiu (Lord Krishna), the family deity of the Seths of Kolkata.
Bhog and Bhat (boiled rice) is soft-textured rice intermixed with dal (pulses), which is offered to the Hindu God and Goddess, especially to the ‘Lord Gobinda’ (‘Lord Krishna’) during puja or religious festivals. It finds mentioned as the ‘bhog of Lord Krishna’ in ‘Chaitanyacharimrita’ based on the biography of ‘Shree Chaitanyadeva’ during the period of 16th century.
Gobindabhog rice is characterised by exotic aroma and sweet buttery flavour. The strength of aroma and the characteristic taste of the rice is the result of the combined influence of the soil and climate of the region in South eastern region of West Bengal (Bardhaman, Bankura, Hooghly, Nadia, Birbhum, Murshidabad, North 24 Parganas Howrah) where it is grown.
Gobindabhog is traditionally grown in lower Gangetic plains and rahr region of West Bengal for about 400-500 years. Gobindabhog an indigenous rice of the region, has been adopted to grow in medium to upland during kharif season.
The optimum sowing time of Gobindabhog rice is the month of Aasahr in Bengali calendar, i.e .from middle of June to middle of July during kharif season. The variety produces tall-statured plants with lodging tendency at hard dough or near-maturity stage, which makes the variety unsuitable in low land situation.
The grains of Gobindabhog are golden-yellow in colour. The milled rice is white in colour and short-bold in shape. The kernels of Gobindabhog contains low amylose (17.5-18.5%), medium protein (7.1-7.4%), intermediate gelatinization temperature, medium elongation ratio and medium-strong aroma
Gobindabhog rice is also used for preparation of pulao or biryani, payesh (milk based dessert), chira (flattened rice), pitha (home-made cakes), etc.
