175. Allahabad Surkha Guava

Allahabad Surkha Guava are a variety of guava having deep pink color inside instead of the typical white color and an apple red exterior skin. This fruit is sweet, and strongly flavoured with few seeds and is slightly depressed at both ends. The plants are vigorous, dome shaped and compact. 

Allahabad Sebiya or Allahabad Surkha is unique and different from guavas grown elsewhere. It has an apple-red exterior and a succulent deep pink colour inside; hence, the name ‘Surkha’.

‘Apple-coloured guava’ variety Allahabad Surkha has originated as chance seedling in the village Abubakkarpur, Allahabad. In Uttar Pradesh, Villages of Chail, Muratganj, Newada, Manjhanpur blocks Prayagraj (Allahabad) region has the distinction of producing best quality guavas.

The specific area of known for Surkha Guava is situated between two rivers i.e. Yamuna and Ganga flowing parallel together and at a point merged making a triangle, known as the sangam. It has distinct Agro climatic conditions, which are responsible to the red colour.

Biological classification of Guava fruit is as given below

Genus       : Psidium

Species    : Guajava

The plants are vigorous, dome-shaped, compact with abundant Foliage. Leaves are Laminar and large, dark green, elliptical and with entire margin. The flowers are borne signally or in a cyme. The fruit is known for its medical properties such that during the winter season because it neutralizes disease symptoms.

According to Akbar Allahabadi, a well-known poet from Prayagraj, the guava of Allahabad is a divine fruit with its genuine home in the country of God and refers it to as ‘amrod’. It would seem that his remarks carry a lot of weight because Allahabad Surkha Guava is frequently referred to as a heavenly treat by all who have had the pleasure of eating it over the years.
