Mango Malihabadi Dusseheri is a variety of mango with fibreless flesh and with pleasant flavour and taste. The region comprising of Malihabad, Mal and Kakori tehsils of Lucknow district of Uttar Pradesh on the banks of Gomati river is famous for Mango Malihabadi Dusseheri.
Dusseheri mangos are favoured for their sweet flavour and juicy, smooth flesh and are a prized seasonal summer fruit utilized in raw and cooked preparations. There are several regional names for Dusseheri mangoes, including Dusari, Dashehari, Dusehri, and Dasheri.
Dusseheri mangoes are small to medium-sized fruits, averaging 9 to 15 centimeters in length, and have an elongated, straight oval shape with blunt, curved ends. The skin is semi-thick, smooth, leathery, and subtly waxy, ranging in colour from light green to yellow-green, transforming into a golden yellow hue when ripe.
Underneath the surface, the orange flesh is tender, succulent, and almost entirely fibreless, encasing a moderately-sized stone. Dusseheri mangoes are highly aromatic and bear a tropical, nectar like scent
Dusseheri mango is a mango cultivar which originated in a village near Kakori in Lucknow district in 18th century. The mango similar to Dusseheri first appeared in the gardens of the Nawab of Lucknow. Abdul Hameed Khan kandhari grafted that plant and given special treatment which resulted Dusseheri mango. Since then Dusseheri plants have been produced and planted throughout India.
Different methods of propagation are being used in different regions growing Mango Malihabadi Dusseheri but in Malihabad and its adjoining area inarching and veneer grafting are commonly practiced.
Inarching refers to uniting the selected shoot (scion) of a desired parent tree (mother plant) with the potted or transplanted seedling (rootstock) by approach grafting. In case of veneer grafting a downward and inward 30 to 40 mm long cut is made in the smooth area of the stock at a height of about 20 cm
Dusseheri mangoes, like other mango varieties, are an excellent source of vitamin C to strengthen the immune system and fiber to regulate the digestive tract. The fruits are also a good source of vitamin A to maintain healthy organ functioning, folate to assist in producing red blood cells, and other amounts of zinc, vitamin E, iron, and calcium.
In addition to vitamins and minerals, Dusseheri mangoes contain phytochemicals in the skin that may have antioxidant-like properties to reduce inflammation.
Dusseheri mangoes have a sweet flavour and are considered “table” mangoes, meaning they are most often eaten fresh, out of hand. The fruits can be consumed as a healthy dessert or snack, simply sliced and served, or the flesh can be blended into juices, shakes, and smoothies.
Dusseheri mangoes can also be sprinkled with salt or chili powder, cut into salads, diced into salsa, or rolled in hand, squeezing the fruit to soften the pulp and poking a hole in the skin to release the juice.
