248. Nanjanagud Banana

Nanjanagud Banana is a variety of banana grown in the Mysore and Chamaraj Nagar Districts of Karnataka. It was widely cultivated in the Nanjanagud Taluk of Mysore District in the earlier period and hence the name was derived. It is locally known as Nanjangud Rasabale or Nanjangud rasabalehannu

Nanajanagud Banana is one of the 20 varieties of Bananas grown in the state of Karnataka. But this particular variety is very famous for its delicious taste and unique aroma. It is produced by organic method of cultivation.

Nanajanagud Banana fruits tapers to apex with prominent two ridges. Ripe fruits drop off easily from the pedicel, with thin rind. Fruits turns yellow upon ripening with yellow spots. Pulp is very sweet with an excellent flavour and cream coloured.

Banana bunches are harvested with a curved knife when the fruits are fully developed, the angles are becoming less prominent and the fruits on the upper hands are changing to light green and the flower remnants are easily rubbed off the tips. Curved Stalk is characteristic to this variety of Banana.

Nanjanagud Banana is famous for its delicious taste and unique flavour which is influenced by the black clay alluvial saline soils on the banks of Kapila River of Nanajagud and unique method of organic cultivation. The beautiful aroma spreads to nearby areas indicating presence of Banana.

It is often used in traditional festivals and religious ceremonies. The fruit is small in size and buttery soft to eat. It is usually eaten without the peel. As it cannot be grown in foreign areas, its availability is less and hence there is a good demand for it.

Nanjangud Banana is an important source of Vitamins and fibre. It improves the haemoglobin level, prevents kidney stones and cures ulcers. It is also known as stress reliever which helps in controlling the heart rate.
