022. Udupi Malligae

Udupi Malligae (also known Shankarapura Malligae) a variety of jasmine cultivated in Bhatkal and then Shankarapura in Udupi district about 100 years ago. Jasminum sambac is the Botanical name for this variety.

Plant is a small and bushy with leaves of light green with yellowish shade. Flowers in cymose inflorescence. It is used for the Jasmine Braid (Malligae Jade) for brides in Mangaluru and bridal hairstyle pattern is typical and specific to Mangaluru.

The laterite soil condition of the region, high humidity and heavy rainfall makes area suitable for growing this crop. Propagation is mainly by cuttings. Planting is done in the month August–September.
