042. Nirmal Furniture

Nirmal furniture represents Nawabi styled fine quality painted furniture from Nirmal, Telangana. It is a unique form of hand-made wooden furniture, painted beautifully in golden colour using gold powder before they are offered for customers. Nirmal Furniture is famous the world over for its durability, outstanding look and the smoothest finishing.

The origin of Nirmal art and craft is traced back to the Kakatiya era, which was later patronised by the Nizams of Hyderabad. Legend says that once during the Nizam’s visit to Nirmal, the Nizam was given a tremendous grand welcome. All the craftsmen indulged themselves in decorating the venue. It included an intricately designed banana bud whose petals were coloured gold. This embellishment was suspended above the Nizam’s seat, which unfurled showering cascade of golden coloured petals on the Nizam.

Overwhelmed by this creativity the Soma Kshatriyas or the woodcarvers received the royal patronage of the Nizam. Since then the art is being flourishing. The artisans have imbibed this art of manufacturing the furniture from their forefathers and the same is now practiced from generation to generation.

The furniture is made of teak wood and the process begins with cutting and carving the wood into desired shape based on the required furniture. Then sawdust paper is rubbed for a smooth finish painting and then coat of primer and lapam is applied to make the surface smooth. Once the surface is smooth, varnish is applied and then allowed to dry and then on that the floral designs are made.

The artisans of this town combine artistry in painting with great skills in woodcraft and they produce a variety of household and also office furnishings that lends aesthetic appeal to the surroundings. These include decorative Beds, Dewans, Rajasthani and French style soft-sets, Dining Tables, Teapoys, rocking chair, partition screens, chowkis, pen holders, wooden platforms, Pooja mandapams, trollies etc.
