Solapur Chaddar is an iconic jacquard woven cotton blanket made from the state of Maharashtra. These blankets are popular in India where they are manufactured, previously by hand loom but now by Jacquard machine and are known for their unique design and durability.
Solapur is known for its textile industry. The development of the handloom weaving industry in Solapur seems to have commenced during the regime of the Peshwas.
Solapur chaddars were the first product of Maharashtra to obtain Geographical Indication (GI) status. These bed sheets are known for their design, durability and all-season use. It is basically a 100% cotton grey yarn, dyed to get fresh colourful textures and woven in looms.
There are different stages in the production of Cheddar. In the first stage the grey yarn is taken for dyeing and optical whitening. In this process hanks of the grey yarn are submerged in water containing wetting agent overnight. Then are they are taken out and washed with cold water.
Then the yarn is taken for bleaching process wherein cotton impurities and colouring matter are removed. The colour of the yarn becomes off-white which is then taken for dechlorination with peroxide or sodium bisulphite. Now the yarn is ready for dyeing and optical whitening.
For Cheddars Napthols, Vat dyes and direct dyes are used. The dyed yarns are transferred to flanged bobbins in case warp and cone in case of weft with the help of winding machines. In case of weft yarn, the cones are then transferred to pirns on circular or horizontal pirn winding machines.
Warp yarn on flanged bobbins in different colours are then arranged as per the design requirement on creel machine. The yarn is transferred on drum and then to beams. Weaving is done on power loom with warp from beam and pirn in shuttle for weft. The required product is made according to the design with the help of jacquard machine fitted over the loom.
Apart from Maharashtra, Solapur Chaddar has demand in Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan within India, while it also has demand in United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, South Africa, United States, United Kingdom and Canada.
