The term "terry" derives from the French word "tirer," which means to draw out. This is a reference to the pile loops that were taken out by hand in order to manufacture absorbent traditional towelling.

To make towels, terry is the most used fabric, and it is more absorbent than a cotton towel due to the fabric's loops. It is made of uncut loops. Depending on the use of the towel, these loops' lengths vary.

In most cases, weaving techniques are used to create the terry structure, then the terry towels. The fabric has projecting loops that make it supple and more able to absorb moisture. The loops are tightly woven together and solidly built in materials of superior quality.

Terry Towels are manufactured using jacquard mechanism on rapier looms, hand looms or power looms. Solapur accounts for 70% of global demand for yarn dyed jacquard terry towels. Various types of dyes like reactive, vat and direct dyes are used for yarn dyeing of Terry Towels.

Terry Towels of Solapur is perhaps the only product in which the entire manufacturing process of dyeing, winding, warping, weaving, and finishing is done under one roof ensuring quality and lavishness, and is known for its good water absorbing properties.
