153. Firozabad Glass

Firozabad Glass is manufactured by artisans in Firozabad district of Uttar Pradesh making various products such as bangles, beads, lanterns, Christmas trees, kitchenware and various decorative items. The glassware handicrafts are made by using unique mouth blown technique, a rare form of blowing air through a glass pipe to provide required shape, reflecting perfect craftsmanship.

The product spectrum of Firozabad Glassware is very wide. The specification is followed as per the order for the glassware manufactured. However, the product spectrum can be segregated on the basis of techniques used, glass type and the product types.

Glassware manufactured at Firozabad can be classified into the following categories: 

Glass Bangles (Choori) craft – Bangles with two angular open ends are manufactured. Then they are open angular ends are aligned (Sidhai), joined (Judai). The designs on the upper side of the bangles are grooved. Bangles are then baked in muffle furnace (Pakki Bhatti) to make them smooth and bright. They are further decorated with jari, ceramic work or silver or golden colouring in the grooves. The bangle could be round, flat, oval or spiral in shape. 

Products manufactured using mouth/lungs blowing technique - the melted glass is taken on one edge/side of the hollow metal stick and from the other side it is lifted over the head and the other end of the stick is put in mouth to blow. This method is used to give shape to the Melted glass at the other end. Goods like double walled glass refills known as Glass Flasks and bulbs are made using this technique which requires nothing but perfect craftsmanship.

Products manufactured using machinery - There is a long spectrum of glassware manufactured by using machines with minimum human intervention. The product line includes bottles, cutlery, most of the kitchenware and tableware and automobile headlight covers. 

Glass Beads Craft - the hollow tubes are first manufactured from which glass beads are made. The beads with a hole at the centre are to get tug with the articles to be decorated. There is another kind of beads which look like artificial diamond, with is used for decoration and embroidery.

The decorative items like chandeliers, Christmas Tree, animals’ miniatures, statues of different kinds like of God & Goddess. 

Soda ash and Silica are the main raw materials used for producing glass in which chemicals of known properties are mixed as raw material for achieving certain properties, like hardness, refractive index and colour, in glass. Float Glass is widely used for making all kind of goods. 

The glass produced in Firozabad can be categorized into the following three classes based on the raw material used in glass: 

  • Soda Lime Silica Glass (Soda Ash 33%, Silica Sand 66% and chemicals 1%) produced at around 1450 degree Celsius; Most of the products are manufactured using Soda Lime Glass. 
  • Borosilicate Glass (Boron 12%, Silica Sand 82% and Soda Ash 6%) produced at around 1600 degree Celsius; and 
  • Lead Glass (Soft Glass) in which around 24% Lead (Pb) is mixed as a raw material.
